CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Grace’s eyes popped open with a start. It was no surprise that Amy and Charlotte were infiltrating her sleep, causing intense nightmares. Grace had a tough time imagining Amy in a homeless shelter. Based on her perfectly pressed appearance and castle of a home, she assumed the woman was born and raised in a world that was never short on anything, but there had obviously been a shift in her life, a turn that had been taken at some point in time.

She hoped to find out more from Charlotte today, when she planned to conveniently be home for the daily dog walk. It also helped that she had back pain that spilled into her hips, causing a tightness that radiated throughout her entire lower body. She had enough sick days accumulated. Why not use one to work on solving a crime?

Grace, already on her side, pushed herself to a seated position and took a long swig from the glass of water that sat on her nightstand. The other side of the bed was empty, the top blanket folded over neatly by Mark, who had left for work several hours before.

It was already nine. Charlotte would be arriving later that morning. Time alone in the house would give Grace the opportunity to do some recon. Since she had accidentally seen the image of the engagement ring on Mark’s computer, she had little time to think about the potential impending proposal and the possibility of him popping the question during their upcoming getaway. She padded down the stairs and headed straight to the coffee table where he had last used his laptop. It’s not snooping if I happen to use his computer to search for something while mine is charging.

On the screen were multiple open windows, mostly workout videos. She navigated her fingertips across the keyboard and mouse and pulled up the search history. He had visited several different jeweler’s sites over the past month, from a local jeweler in town to a Tiffany’s on Newbury Street in Boston. No way would he be able to afford that store. The window that she had seen days before was still minimized in the bottom right corner. Just as she clicked on it to bring it front and center on the screen, the vibration of her phone on the coffee table startled her, causing her to slam the laptop shut in one rapid motion. In coordination with the vibrations, the word dad danced across the screen. It had been a couple of weeks since she’d spoken with him and every time he called, her nerves spun out of control, afraid that he was going to present her with bad news about her mother in the assisted living facility.

“Hey, Dad, what’s up?” She pressed the phone to her ear, the greeting growing more familiar every time she said it to the father who just became a part of her life one year earlier.

“Hey, honey, I just wanted to give you an update on your mother and of course check on how that baby is growing.
